A major update has been released for aspirants preparing for the Civil Services Examination 2026 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The government has officially announced 933 vacancies across various prestigious services, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and Indian Foreign Service.

The vacancy details were shared by the Department of Personnel and Training, which oversees recruitment for civil services in India. Compared to the previous year, the number of vacancies in All India Services and Central Services has slightly decreased, but the examination still offers a major opportunity for thousands of candidates across the country.

IAS, IPS, and IFS Vacancy Details for 2026

According to the official data released by the Union Public Service Commission, the distribution of vacancies among the top three All India Services is as follows:

IAS Vacancies

A total of 180 posts are available in the Indian Administrative Service.

OBC: 49
EWS: 18

The IAS remains the most sought-after service among UPSC aspirants due to its authority in policy implementation and administrative leadership.

IPS Vacancies

There are 150 vacancies for the Indian Police Service.

IFS Vacancies

The Indian Foreign Service has 40 vacancies for 2026.

UPSC Civil Services Selection Process

The Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission is conducted in three stages.

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The first stage is the objective-type Preliminary Examination. It acts as a screening test, and only candidates who qualify this stage are eligible for the next round.

2. Main Examination (Mains)

Candidates who clear the prelims appear for the Mains examination, which consists of descriptive papers testing knowledge, analytical ability, and writing skills.

3. Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who qualify the mains are called for the final interview or personality test.

The final merit list is prepared based on:

1750 marks from the Mains examination
275 marks from the Interview

The combined score determines the candidate’s rank and service allocation.

Face Authentication System Introduced from 2026

Starting from 2026, a new technological measure will be implemented in UPSC examinations. The commission will introduce face authentication technology at examination centers.

Candidates will be identified using artificial intelligence–based facial recognition to prevent impersonation and other fraudulent practices during the exam.

This step is expected to improve transparency and maintain the integrity of the recruitment process.

Another important change allows candidates with disabilities to choose their preferred examination center, making the process more accessible.

Reduced Time for Filing Objections

The commission has also made a change regarding objections to question papers and answer keys.

Previously, candidates had seven days to submit objections. Under the new rules, the time has been reduced to five days after the preliminary examination.

Candidates must now submit their objections within five days of the prelims exam date.

Eligibility Restriction for Certain Candidates

According to the updated rules, candidates already serving in IAS or IFS positions will not be allowed to appear in the Civil Services Examination 2026.

This change is intended to maintain fairness and allow new candidates an opportunity to enter the civil services.
